Chapter 9
October 17th, 2002
Miss Baylie Nelson,
I need to apologize but I don’t know where to start. Do I apologize for being in your room and keeping company with your family and friends? Do I apologize for holding your hand and talking to you before you regained consciousness? Do I apologize for running out of the room like a blue phantom when you opened your eyes? At least I don’t have to apologize for kissing you. Your father was open to that option and I was totally against it. Your father would do anything to have you with him, happy and healthy. I’ll just say I’m sorry for any distress I might have caused you.
Your car, your car is incredible. It’s more of a time machine than an automobile. I had to install safety features still. I don’t know you but I know your family and friends some and I don’t want them to go through this again. I would have gotten you retractable three-point belts but they seemed so out of place, the solid mount sash belt and lap belt seemed to fit in. I’ll tell you right now you hit that shoulder belt in an accident it might break your collarbone or dislocate your shoulder but that’s an improvement over a coma or death. I hope you enjoy your new stereo and console. I don’t like the fact that you have to look down to see the unit but its display is large so it should be good for a glance. I don’t know you I just want you safe.
Damn hun, if you’re as special and as wonderful as those around you make you out to be sign me up. See me. I’m not expecting you to see me right away. I know comas change things and you need time to readjust to your life. I know you have to figure out what to do about everything, school, Outreach, and what not. Sam has been trying to keep me abreast of things but I want to hear it from you if you want to let me know. I’m located on the corner of Sailfin and Second. Don’t worry about me being busy I’ll always have time for you.
By the way I rushed to the shop the day you returned to write this. You get things straight and I’ll see you soon.
Edwin “Ed” Cotton Stephens, III
Baylie sat in her kitchen rereading and rereading the letter. This stranger seemed so honest and so straightforward just like herself she concluded. She found it peculiar that her father spoke with him about her so extensively and shown him so many pictures. Her father had her best interest in heart as he had done from the beginning so peculiarity aside there had to be something to him. She thought it was total horseshit that she responded to him and not her family or friends but they wouldn’t lie to her. She was still shaken that she woke up to his presence. She did feel like he was a coward for leaving like he did.
